    About
    David Schram

    Sound Engineer and Producer

I am David Schram a Sound Engineer and Producer with a passion for Music born in 1976 in Hungary. I have been in music since I was a kid, although I don't come from a musical family background I was always surrounded by a vast variety of music and sounds. Listening to LPs from my father's record collection was one of my favourite activities. Listening to the beating heart of the city after I went to bed for a good night's sleep was also a recurring unwelcome pastime leaving me sleepless for hours.

My best friend's father Tamás Berki - Hungarian Jazz Singer - , a man who has music running through his veins was a great inspiration. By listening to the songs of Afro-American artists such as Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Chic etc. I have developed a great sense for understanding the groove, "sex" and feel of music. We also talked about the sound and production quality of these records, something unachievable at that time in the Socialist Hungary.

All of these early experiences in the world of sound and music made my ears sensitive for the beautiful resonaces surrounding us.

It wasn't until I turned 16 when I picked up the guitar inspired by the Grunge movement of the early 90's. Blown away by Nirvana's "Smells like teen" I went on a musical journey of my own.

    1996-2002

    FreshFabrik's Single "Serious"
taken from the album 'Nerve' Released by Warner Bros. Hungary in 1998

In 1996 Aged 20 I have joined FreshFabrik a Hungarian music group that played Hardcore like music then. The band was successful in Hungary as it represented a genre that was unique at the time in the country. It was a so called "cross-over" which included Hard Core, Hip-Hop and Electronica as the main styles.
My arrival to the band as a guitarist and a Programmer opened up new doors band as I brought electronic elements into their heavy, riff based music. This was my first encounter with primitive DAW softwares in an exciting time of early "domestic" digital music creation.
We recorded our album 'Nerve' in 1998 which left me with a great deal of disappointment as the sound of the album did not reflect the music's raw, energetic qualities.
This was my first studio experience with a impatient Sound Engineer who hassled us during the recording which resulted in creating the album in a stressful environment for the duration of a month. Probably this was the momentum that led me into Engineering as recording our Album was somewhat sacred for me. Manifestations of a musicians thought through the language of music is important to capture in full detail or the magic is lost. The magic was lost there leaving me void after hard years of work put into creation.

I made a vow: This can never happen again. Next time I will be taking over the engineering duties. Although my first studio experience was not positive I have learnt how not to approach recording situations and how to be careful and empathetic to maintain the magic all the way.

After I spent 3 years in the band touring the country and Europe I figured that the stage and musician's lifestyle was not for me. It was time to move on.

In 2000 I have started my degree course in Sound Engineering at SAE TC Sydney, Australia.

with the SSL 4000 G+ console

In 2002 after finishing at SAE TC Sydney, Australia with a Bachelor in Recording Arts degree I was hired at Warner Brothers Hungary's Aquarium Studios as an in-house Sound Engineer and Producer. I have worked here on Warner's recordings covering a wide range of musical genres, developing deep understanding of different musical styles
Over the 3 years I gained solid experience in using state-of-the-art studio equipment such as SSL4000G+, SSL AWS 900 and MCI consoles, recording to Studer A800 2“ Tape machine, Protools HD and various modern and vintage compressors and effect units.

In 2005 Aquarium Studios was sold to a private investor who owned Pannonia Studios and integrated it into it's existing complex. I have spent another 5 years here before I moved on to work as a freelancer to establish my own company with a Project Studio.

Over the course of years in recording I have worked with almost all prominent artists of the Hungarian music scene. 7 of my recording projects won prizes in best album of the year category of Hungary's "Grammy" called the Fonogram and another 6 were nominated for the same category.

  • Fun in the Studio

Wouldn't it be easier to create in a fun environment?

Sure it would and that is what I am aiming for!

    Fun in the Studio

How to tune a snare drum?

This is me being silly in the studio, giving a lecture on how to tune a snare drum with a fake german accent. :)

To me creating a fun, easygoing and friendly atmosphere in the studio is an absoulte go for.

    More stupidity :)
